SUMMARY:Fostering Futures
DESCRIPTION:Fostering Futures is an interactive training facilitated by our Youth Engagement Specialist\, Cameron Burrell and one of our Advocate Supervisors\, Ellen Franklin.  It is mandatory for all Volunteers working with youth age 14 and up (and please feel free to sign up even if you are working with a younger child).   \nFostering Futures is an interactive training created by National CASA which is designed to help volunteers working with older youth (ages 14-21) help their youth be better prepared for independence and success when they age out at 21. \nThe training involves discussing the importance of helping youth to be prepared to age out\, provides resources to use in working with aging out youth\, an opportunity to role play working with youth and\, maybe most importantly\, an opportunity to talk with other CASAs about the challenges of working with youth who are facing aging out. \n**Please note that this is an in-person training at the CASA office – 102 W. Pennsylvania Ave.\, Towson\, MD 21204 – CASA Training Room #401 \n**PARKING – Behind our building there is a parking garage – Allegheny Plaza Parking Garage at 111 Allegheny Avenue\, Towson\, MD – you may park here and we will give you validation for free parking when you leave. \n**DINNER will be provided! \nPlease RSVP HERE!

SUMMARY:Beer & Big Hearts!
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to Beers & Big Hearts! Thirsty for a Cause? So Are We. \nMen – Please join us at CVP Towson for a laid-back evening of brews\, good vibes\, and meaningful conversation. We’re hosting a special info session to connect with men in our community who are interested in stepping up as CASA volunteers — and we’d love for you to bring a friend! \nEnjoy a drink\, learn how you can make a real difference in the life of a child in foster care\, and meet others who are passionate about giving back. \nWhether you’re just curious or ready to dive in\, come hang out and see what CASA is all about. \nBecause big hearts (and cold beers) make the perfect combo. \nSee you there! \nA little bit about the importance of having male Volunteers work with our male youth:\n\nAlthough CASA volunteers are trained and ready to advocate for any child\, boys fare better with a consistent\, positive male influence. According to research by Kyle Pruett\, M.D.\, and Warren Farrell\, Ph.D.\, children in foster care are likelier to thrive academically\, abstain from using drugs\, display self-control\, and relate well with others when they have a reliable and supportive male presence in their lives.\nAs a CASA\, men can affect the lives of vulnerable youth by developing their self-confidence\, teaching them how to persevere\, and providing a feeling of physical and emotional security. They can set an example for how to build healthy relationships. They effectively work with social workers\, caregivers\, attorneys\, and other professionals to ensure that a judge has all the information needed to make well-informed decisions for a child in foster care. Most importantly\, they advocate for their best interests and ensure their voices are heard.\n\nPlease kindly RSVP HERE! \n

SUMMARY:Support and Advocacy for LGBTQ+ Youth
DESCRIPTION:Back by popular demand\, in partnership with Chase Brexton’s The Center for LGBTQ Health Equity\, made possible by an Ally grant from Ticket To Dream\, CASA of Baltimore County is proud to present “Cultural Humility and LBGTQ+ Communities: Support and Advocacy for LGBTQ+ Youth”. This training was first provided in October\, 2023 but the demand was high to continue the conversations and start new ones! So whether you’re coming for Part 2\, or would like to come learn and ask questions how to best support our CASA youth\, join us for the following: \nClinicians\, healthcare workers and social advocates serve sexual and gender minority people every day\, but adequate preparation about supporting these populations is rarely offered professional training. Using a Cultural Humility framework\, this workshop provides a broad overview of LGBTQ+ terms\, gender identity concepts\, cultural beliefs\, health disparities\, and barriers to accessing services\, as well as best practice strategies for creating an affirming care experience for both CASA volunteers and the diverse youth they serve.\nKate Bishop\, MSSA (pronouns she/her)\, Education Coordinator at the Center for LGBTQ Health Equity of Chase Brexton\, is a seasoned professional development trainer with expertise in working with LGBTQ populations\, sexual and reproductive health care\, adolescent development\, intimate partner violence\, and sexual trauma. She is certified as a trainer through GLSEN (Gay\, Lesbian and Straight Education Network) as well as SAGE (Services and Advocacy for GLBT Elders). Before joining the Chase Brexton team\, she developed the capacity building program at the University of Maryland School of Medicine’s STAR TRACK Adolescent HIV program\, providing cultural responsiveness trainings for agencies that serve sexual minority youth of color. Ms. Bishop holds a Bachelor of Arts in Gender Studies from Hiram College and a Masters in Social Work from Case Western Reserve University. \nDinner and CEUs provided! \nPlease register HERE!
